GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 15

ON THE AIR OFF THE PRESS

O'Connor actually sticks up for gays

by John DuAne Graves

First off, some good news. WVIZ, Channel 25 has decided to air the next season of the national gay variety show In the Life. The first show of the new season, hosted by lesbian comic Lea DeLaria, will air Sunday, October 17 and will feature film clips from this year's gay pride celebrations around the country. Thanks to all of you who called WVIZ in support of the show. You can thank the station by making a membership pledge when the show airs during their fundraising marathon.

The very gay-positive America Undercover documentary: "Why Am I Gay? Stories of Coming Out in America" is playing on HBO. Produced by psychiatrist Kenneth Paul Rosenberg, it presents testimony from a number of experts that being gay is genetic in nature, and testimony from three gay men and a lesbian couple on what it's like to grow up gay in America.

The Gay 90's, WHK 1420 AM radio's live gay show on commercial radio is asking for our help. Buck Harris, the show's host, reports that the show must bring in more advertising revenues to stay on the air. Buck says that WHK has been very supportive of the program, asks that we encourage businesses, gay and straight, to advertise on his show, and that we encourage advertisers by mentioning the show when we patronize their businesses. Buck and Diane Elze host the show every Monday night from 9 to 11 pm (except September 13).

Beth Anthony, a lesbian, will join the household on MTV's real-life series Real World on September 14. Anthony said, in a report by Lance Loud in his Advocate column, that she "took time on the show to introduce the fact that she was a lesbian" and that she "wanted to be a positive ex-

ample of lesbianism—not a murderer, not a psycho but a very normal person who, as a part of my life, chooses to sleep with women." She went on to stress that the show's producers had gone out of their way to avoid any hint of a homophobic atmosphere on the set.

Jim and Dave, GayWaves' roving correspondents, found gay-related articles in the National Catholic Reporter. Paulist Father Stephen Harris' vestment was stained with his blood, as was the altar cloth at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Manhattan, as antigay protesters stormed the altar and assaulted him while he was celebrating a mass on June 23.

Witnesses attending the liturgy, which was to honor St. John the Baptist and mark lesbian and gay pride and history month, said that 18 demonstrators arrived before the service and demanded that the mass not occur. Paul Morrissey, one of the anti-gay demonstrators, attempted to wrestle the microphone away from the priest. In the struggle, Morrissey caught the priest in a headlock and caused him to cut his hand on the microphone. Morrissey and another demonstrator were later arrested. Cardinal John O'Connor, noted for his outspoken opposition to gays, condemned the attack and said everyone has a right and duty to worship without being interrupted.

The National Catholic Reporter also reported that Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of the archdiocese of Chicago offered mass for 900 Catholic lesbians and gays in June. Rick Garcia, director of the Chicago-based Catholics for Lesbian and Gay Rights, praised the cardinal for his action.

The producers of PBS' P.O.V. series have been asking viewers to send them videotaped or written responses to programs in the series that were aired this year. The.

USA Today reports that New Line Home Video is sending two versions of Three Of Hearts, to video retailers for feedback on which version to release October 20. The film is about a lesbian who, to win back her bisexual lover, hires a male prostitute to woo and break the woman's heart, thus turning her against men. Entertainment Weekly named the action their "politically incorrect promo stunt of the week." A spokesperson for New Line Home Video said that the "happy" ending was the one where the man wins the bisexual woman. Contact your video retailers to find out what the differences are and urge them to vote for the more gay-positive ending.
